ARENAL VOLCANO

Less than 100 miles away from the Costa Rican capital city of San José, visitors will discover the fantastic Arenal Volcano, the epicenter of its homonymous national park.

Costa Rica is a land of volcanoes, and Arenal is the best known of all of them. It's certainly an inevitable place to visit if you are vacationing in our beautiful country.

Arenal has a conic, almost symmetrical shape, and makes for an astounding landscape by day and also by night. Until 2010, this volcano remained active, and visitors could witness its activity. Since then, it has remained dormant. But, with these giants, you can never tell when they'll wake up again.

There's another volcano in the Arenal National Park, the Cerro Chato, which has been inactive for thousands of years, and a lagoon formed in its crater.

There are several activities inside or near the Arenal Volcano National Park. Tourists can take a variety of hikes throughout the park and discover waterfalls, hot springs, and several hundreds of species of birds, including the near-threatened resplendent quetzal.

Arenal Volcano National Park is also home to the Arenal Lake, the biggest in all Costa Rica. There, tourists can marvel at the magnificent views, practice some water sports, or go fishing.

To visit the national park and its various attractions, you can either stay inside or in the nearby village of La Fortuna. This last one is a tourism-dedicated easy-going town, with hotels, restaurants, and shops.
